Undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Agricultural Sciences supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant, LEADING Hispanics, recently traveled to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to meet with collaborating institutions, Texas A&M University – Kingsville, New Mexico State University, and University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez.

Students presented their research, met with prospective USDA mentors for summer internships, participated in professional development activities, toured agricultural research stations, and engaged in peer-led bilingual scientific writing workshops. This is the second year of the LEADING Hispanics grant, a $20M award that spans five years and features an annual Career Fair and Symposium, which will be hosted by Texas State in fall 2026. Current Texas State students will continue to conduct research under faculty guidance through May when they will travel to meet with peers from collaborating institutions again, before embarking on 8-week internships in summer 2025.
